Mr Zubyr Soomro

Chair of Board 

Zubyr Soomro has been a career international banker with 33 years spent at Citibank in senior level assignments in the Middle East, Turkey, UK and Pakistan. In 1997, he was appointed as Chairman and President of United Bank where he was tasked with restructuring it for privatisation, after which he re-joined Citibank Pakistan as its Managing Director. He was awarded the Quaid-e-Azam Centenary Gold Medal by the State Bank of Pakistan in 2004 for leading reforms in the banking sector in his role as Chairman of the Pakistan Banks Association, and for his successful restructuring of United Bank.

Zubyr has also been actively involved in financial inclusion and poverty alleviation over the past 20 years, including as Chairman of the Pakistan Microfinance Investment Company, the apex entity for the sector, majority owned by UK and German Government related entities. Additionally he has served on the boards of the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, the Lahore University of Management Sciences, the National Education Management Foundation, the Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust, Aitchison College, Acumen Pakistan, the US-based Grameen Foundation and the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture.

He has twice served on the Pakistan Government’s Economic Advisory Council, been a member of the board of the State Bank of Pakistan, and on the policy board of the Security & Exchange Commission of Pakistan, the board of the National Investment Trust, Chairman of the Board of the Karachi Stock Exchange, President of the Overseas Chamber of Commerce & Industry and President of the American Business Council. Zubyr’s other current directorships include EFG Hermes, the Cairo based investment banking group, and Sarmaya Pakistan Ltd, the government's sovereign fund, to oversee it's State Owned Enterprises, and Pakistan's leading oncology services hospital group, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust and Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Pakistan.

He has a BSc Hons from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Masters from the School of Oriental and African Studies (London University). He also attended executive programs at Harvard Business School and the Harvard Kennedy School, the last being in October 2020 on Leadership and Character in Uncertain Times.


Mr Bande Hasan

Bande Hasan began his career with UBL Limited in Pakistan where he held a variety of positions over a ten year period in marketing, credit administration, trade finance and branch management. He spent the following nine years at UBL in Dubai where he spent three years as Senior Vice President and Regional Manager.  Bande then moved to London where he spent a year with UBL UK as Senior Vice President after which he returned to Dubai to take up the role of Deputy General Manager for Middle East Bank. This was followed by six years with Bank of Credit and Commerce (Overseas) Ltd in Miami, USA, as Senior Executive to the Latin America and Caribbean regions.

Bande’s roles thereafter include some years as General Manager at Bank of Credit and Commerce (Overseas) Ltd, Cayman Islands and as a consultant at Deloitte and Touche, also in the Cayman Islands. Following that he spent six years as CEO and Managing Director at Habib Overseas Bank Limited in Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by 16 years as CEO of Habibsons Bank Limited in London.  He retired from executive duties in January 2015 and was appointed Chairman of the Board of United Bank UK on 16 April 2018, where he had served prior to that as an Independent Non-Executive Director for two and a half years.


Mr Shazad Dada

Non-Executive Director

Shazad Dada is a graduate with honors from University of Pennsylvania with Bachelors of Science and Bachelors of Arts degrees and also has an MBA from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. He is a seasoned banker and a prominent capital markets professional, with around 30 years of diverse experience with renowned financial institutions in the United States and Pakistan. 

Before joining UBL as President & CEO, Shazad was the Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors of Standard Chartered Bank (Pakistan) Ltd (“SCBPL”) and Africa & Middle East Regional Management Team.  Prior to joining Standard Chartered, he was the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Barclays Pakistan. Shazad has also worked at the Deutsche Bank Securities Inc in New York for over 15 years in various capacities, last as the Managing Director in the Mergers, Acquisitions and Corporate Advisory Group, before moving back to Pakistan as the Managing Director for Deutsche Bank AG Pakistan. In addition, Shazad is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Developments in Literacy (“DIL”) Pakistan and Council Member of the Institute of Bankers Pakistan. 

Shazad is also associated with various reputed charitable organisations. His contributions on the sustainability front are immense especially for promoting education and health amongst the least privileged and advancing diversity and inclusion within the corporate world.

Mr Brian Firth

Executive Director

After graduating from Birmingham University, Brian Firth began his career in Finance in the late 1980’s with professional services firm Touche Ross & Co. in Cambridge. In 1992 he took up a Financial Accountant position with Pearl Assurance plc in Peterborough, one of the largest providers of life and general insurance and pension services in the UK at the time, until 1999 by which point he was Operations Financial Controller.

Brian joined UBL UK in London directly thereafter where he has remained.  During his 19 years with the Bank, he was appointed Project & Planning Manager in 2003; Financial Controller in 2005; CFO and Company Secretary in 2008; COO in 2017, Interim CEO in January 2018 and finally Brian was appointed CEO on 27 July 2018.

Mr Richard Wilton

Richard Wilton retired in March 2011 after 41 years’ service with HSBC Bank Plc and currently serves as the Senior Independent Non-Executive Director at UBL UK.

He has a broad banking background including senior management positions in retail, commercial and corporate and structured banking. In his last ten years with HSBC, Richard was Global Relationship Manager with a small portfolio of multi-national companies domiciled in the UK, Europe, Russia and the USA with interests across all major trading jurisdictions. The main product concentration was:  debt origination (bi-lateral and syndication), capital markets, international trade, FX/Treasury, electronic products and liquidity funds.

Richard also has extensive experience and knowledge of cross border regulatory requirements.

Mr Zia Ijaz

Non-Executive Director

Zia Ijaz has over 29 years of diversified banking experience, with vast expertise in Retail Banking. He currently heads Branch Banking Group & International Group at UBL Limited, Karachi. 

Prior to joining UBL, Zia served Allied Bank Limited (ABL) for over 12 years in various leading roles (CFO, Group Chief, Commercial & Retail Banking & Group Chief, Operations). Zia has also served as Financial Controller at Riyadh Bank in Saudi Arabia, and as CFO at Askari Bank. Prior to his banking career, Zia was associated with Ford Rhodes Sidat Hyder & Co. (member firm Ernst & Young). He is also Director on the Board of UBL UK.

Zia is a Chartered Accountant and a Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan.

Mr Faraz Haider

Faraz Haider has over twenty-one years professional experience in retail and wholesale banking (including central banking) in Compliance and Operational Risk. He took up his role as Executive Director at UBL UK on 1 December 2020.  Prior to that he was SEVP/Group Chief, Compliance Group at National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) where he managed the compliance review program, designing enterprise-wide compliance risk management frameworks and developing written compliance program/policy documents consistent with management objectives and regulatory compliance. He joined NBP in December 2016.  Faraz previously held leading positions such as Country Head Operational Risk at Standard Chartered Bank, Pakistan;  Head of Compliance at Habib Metropolitan Bank, Pakistan (a subsidiary of AG Zurich) and Group Head Compliance, Legal and Fraud Risk at NIB Bank, Pakistan (a subsidiary of Temasek Group), amongst others.

Faraz holds an MBA degree from the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst from the CFA Institute USA, has passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Exam from AICPA, USA and is a qualified Financial Risk Manager (FRM) from GARP, USA. He is also a Certified Internal Auditor from the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), USA and a Certified Information System Auditor from ISACA, USA.  Additionally he is a certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist from ACAMS, USA and Certified Fraud Examiner from ACFE, USA.


Mr Arif Usmani            

Non-Executive Director

Arif Usmani began his career with Citi Pakistan in 1981 in the Corporate Banking Group and has since then held a number of positions. He has over 35 years’ experience across several geographic markets and areas in various banking disciplines, including a number of critical management positions in the Asia Pacific region. From 1989 to 1994, he was with Saudi Arabia's second largest bank, SAMBA (Saudi American Bank Group), in Riyadh, where he managed some of the largest borrowing relationships in the region.

In 1994, Arif relocated to Singapore and the Asia Pacific region, where he held a number of critical positions in different countries, including Hong Kong and Singapore, for a five year period. Later, he moved as Citi Country Officer to Slovakia where he is credited with significantly developing the business before taking over as Country Head, Citi Nigeria and Regional Head, West Africa - the latter role involving management of the Citi Franchises in Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo and Senegal.

In 2003, Arif moved back to the SAMBA Financial Group as Chief Risk Officer and in 2008 he joined the Citi franchise in Pakistan as CEO. After four years he moved to ADIB (Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank) as Global Head of the Wholesale Banking Group, followed  by a couple of years as CRO at Mashreq Bank and thereafter his appointment as President and Chief Executive of National Bank of Pakistan.  He holds a First Class B.Sc (Hons) degree from Imperial College, University of London and is an Associate of the Royal College of Science.

Mr Masarrat Husain

Independent Non-Executive Director

Masarrat Husain is a risk and business professional.  His banking career spans 40+ years in seven countries and across three continents.  His initial 28 years were spent with Citibank, the next five years with Citibank’s affiliate, Samba, followed by nine years with Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank. 

He began his career in relationship management and gradually moved into risk and management positions which includes managing a banking subsidiary in London.  Masarrat’s experience covers analysing and approving risk for financing in various marketplaces and for products, as well as for clients in the Private, Commercial, Wholesale, Retail, Islamic Banking and Investment Banking business sectors including remedial portfolios.

Masarrat holds an MBA from Tulane University, New Orleans and a Bachelor of Science degree with a Major in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.
